The story so far...
Patrick's cousin, Richard Latham, was behind him starting to draw cartoons. Richard is a talented artist and musician, now focusing on drumming workshops. His 'Bean Men' were an inspiration for Patrick and through copying ideas, characters and other artists work, he started to develop his own style. Patrick has a sister, Georgina, who has lived in Kenya, now in Brighton, and is also an artist whose work can be found here. Involved in sport throughout his school years, Patrick worked on his cricket in particular and progressed through the levels as far as Cambridgeshire CCC and laterly Somerset CCC and Durham CCC playing their 2nd XI's, following in his father's footsteps. (Michael Latham played for Somerset CCC in 1961/62, and then for Gloucestershire CCC in 1963). Now a club cricketer at Northampton Saints CC in Northampton, Patrick enjoys his cricket and during the long (boring) sessions in the field, generally fielding at 3rd man, he thinks about ideas for his cartoons, hence the company name. The horse and countryside influence came from his mother, Maureen Latham, who did her best to get him involved in horses when he was very young. From the moment he could sit up and balance, he was on the back of some pony or other, finding every way of getting off rather than the correct way.. A succession of low branch, horsefly, show jumping and fancy dress incidents put paid to any equestrian career, other than drawing them.. He left his sister and mother to take over the reins as equestriennes of the family. Finishing school after his A levels, one of which was Art & Design, Patrick spent a Gap year at St John's College School Cambridge, before starting a Sports Science degree at Brunel University in West London. After the first year, and deciding that London was not for him, he changed university and attended De Montfort University in Bedford, after which he finished his training with a year qualifying as a teacher at Northampton College University on a Primary PGCE course. During his university years Patrick played cricket for BUSA, and qualified as an MCC member with whom he has been fortunate enough to tour Western Africa in Ghana and The Gambia. In 2000, Patrick accepted a job at Bedford Prep School as a PE, Games & Geography teacher where he stayed for six years, during which time he was assistant housemaster in Burnaby House, edited the school magazine and newsletter, created the sports web site and helped organise sports tours and Arts Festivals. During his time at Bedford, Patrick spent a year working for IPC Media as cartoonist for Horse and Hound magazine submitting one cartoon a week which was featured on the letters page. In 2006, Patrick accepted a job as Assistant Housemaster and Director of Sport back at St John's College School Cambridge. After two and a half years in Cambridge, Patrick has decided to have a break from teaching and pursue a career as a freelance artist and cartoonist. He now works from home in Oakham, Rutland, producing cartoons and caricatures for a range of customers as well as individual commissions. He has held a market stall in Cambridge and attends local arts and craft fairs where he sells original cartoons, prints and greetings cards as well as other products. His work appears monthly in Your Horse Magazine, as an accompaniment to the regular feature, 'Tall Tales'. In 2008, along with two friends, Patrick developed a hog roast company which covers the Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire areas.
